5 Tips to Create an Eco-Friendly Home

Most of us would like to tread more lightly on the planet but knowing how to do that isn’t always so easy. One of the best ways to start living greener is by making small changes right at home. Here are some tips The Batch Yardresidents can use to make their apartments more eco-friendly.

1) Use efficient appliances.

All Batch Yard residences come equipped with Energy Star appliances, which will help you save energy and water while doing household tasks. Energy Star appliances reduce greenhouse gas emissions to help protect the environment and people who use them typically see a utility bill savings of 20% or more!

2) Turn down the thermostat.

New buildings like the Batch Yard are are well-insulated and have brand-new windows with tight seals. This will allow you to turn the heat and air-conditioning down so you stay warm or cool without using as much energy. This saves you money and helps the environment.

3) Switch lightbulbs/turn off the lights.

Compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) are commonplace now because they use so much less energy than incandescent lightbulbs. CFLs consume about 75% less electricity and last up to 10 times longer than traditional bulbs. Replacing just one incandescent with a CFL can generate a savings of more than $80 during the life of the bulb. It’s also important to remember to turn off lights in rooms that aren’t being used!

4) Reduce, reuse, recycle.

Batch Yard residents can create a greener home by reducing the amount of energy they use, reusing things like glass containers or bags from the store and by recycling packaging, newspapers and other single-use containers.

5) Use eco-friendly products.

One of the best ways to treat your home and yourself better is by using nontoxic home, beauty and pet products. A new business in nearby Somerville is dedicated to just that. The Replenish Bar sells nontoxic, fragrance-free products–everything from kitchen and bathroom cleaners to face wash and lotion to pet shampoo and conditioner–all in reusable containers.

With these handy tips, it’s easy to green your home. That makes both your world and the larger world a better place!
